Lee Deckelman
Remarks:
Lee Alan Deckelman graduated from Tullahoma High School in 1984. After a brief stint in college, he joined the army and became an Airborne Ranger, distinguishing himself by earning the Leadership Award in his Ranger Indoctrination Class. As a Ranger, he served as a Team Leader in the 1st Ranger Battalion in Savannah, Georgia. He went on to proudly serve his country in Operation Desert Storm. As a family man and father of two, he joined the Green Berets and successfully completed the elite Special Forces Assessment and Selection Course. That was followed by a placement in the medic course where he once again distinguished himself by receiving the Best Medic award. After 15 years of active duty, Lee medically retired due to a service related injury in 2000. Once again a civilian, Lee joined the Rutherford County’s Emergency Medical Services departmentand was invited to become a member of the sheriff’s department’s tactical response team, F.A.S.T. Lee went on to develop the Tactical Medic Selection Course for the county. The success of that course led to the creation of his first business, Dixie Tactical Medicine. Things abruptly changed for Lee on September 11, 2001. He first served in the War on Terror as a Federal Air Marshal. Two years into the program, he left the NTSB to join hundreds of prior Special Operations Soldiers to serve in Iraq as a Private Security Contractor. Lee would work with companies such as Triple Canopy, Blackwater, SOC-SMG, EODT, USIS, and Olive Group. Over an eight year period, Lee and his teammates would survive countless insurgent attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan without losing a man. Protecting their highest profile asset, US diplomat and future Ambassador Stu Jones, resulted in 20 firefights alone. In 2012, Lee left the world of combat personnel protection and switched to the executive protection field. His clients included Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Zynga cofounder Mark Pincus, hedge fund billionaire Dan Loeb, architect of the DVDWarren Lieberfarb, and Courtney Sale Ross, widow of former Time Warner CEO Steve Ross. Inspired by his year at Facebook, Lee founded the Echelon Grey Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring private security contractors in support of the Global War on Terror receive healthcare support once they return home. Mental health and suicide prevention for these former veterans is his primary focus. From Baghdad to Benghazi former Special Operations personnel (Delta Force, Rangers, SEAL’s, Green Berets, Marine Force Recon, and Air Force PJ’s) have answered the call to protect top government officials in war zones for the past 13 years only to be discarded and forgotten once their contract has ended. The slogan for Lee’s foundation and life mission is “No one gets left behind at home.” Lee is currently working on his life story in a book titled Fire and Forget Soldier with co-author R.W. Ridley. His hope is that by bringing attention to his path to the private security world, he’ll be able to raise awareness for all those who serve their country in nontraditional yet crucial roles.
